Choosing your Degree

Skrivet:    ·  Generally, school

Applying to and attending university is one of the many paths you can take. For some, this is not the ideal route for them, but for those who have their mind set on university may find that choosing a degree can be difficult. First and foremost, it’s important to understand that there is nothing wrong with not experiencing that “eureka!” moment; it just never happened for some of us, so we put on our boots and backpacks and search for ourselves.

◎ Why are you going to university?
There are several reasons as to why you may want to attend university, including the yearning for financial success or simply to learn more or get the experience. Whatever the reason may be, it is important to consider if the degree you choose is interesting enough to you so during stressful episodes, your love for the subject keeps you going and helps you thrive.

◎ Are you ready for the critics?
If you don’t go for the traditional subjects, there is unfortunately a high chance that someone may have something negative to say, or react in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable, angry, or question your decision. For a lot of people, it’s not uncommon to hear “where will that take you?” or an exaggerated parrot response with a big fat question mark. Do not let others sway you.

◎ Which university interests you?
Different universities teach and assess in different ways. This might be something you would like to consider when deciding on what subject area you’re interested in as modules available also vary from one university to another.

◎ What do you enjoy and what are you good at?
If you enjoy and are good at a certain subject, do not be afraid to put it on your list of possible degrees, even if it’s not considered ‘employable’ by some. In reality, whatever subject you choose can provide you with a variety of skills and abilities that employers look for. If there’s nothing you liked enough at school to continue studying, research the many other degrees that are available or ones that combine disciplines.

Put yourself first and be confident!
