Mindfulness

What is mindfulness? The non-judgemental awareness of what is going on inside (our own thoughts and feelings) as well as outside, in any given moment. It is an ancient Buddhist practice that has become increasingly helpful in the hustle and bustle of today. Devoting a little of our time to this skill can improve our wellbeing, as we have the chance to appreciate things we may not normally notice, and in turn lower stress levels.

The art of mindfulness requires one to really empty out their mind from trivial noise, and take a step back to focus on valuing the moment. So, how would you achieve this?

Take the time to really enjoy the flavours and textures of food as you eat. Feel the hot chocolate, tea or coffee warm your insides. Listen to the rhythm of your own breathing, as air gently travels inside and around you. Go on walks down familiar paths you may usually rush through, and you may notice things you haven’t had the time to acknowledge. Put simply, rather than completing a daily task, mind swimming with parts of your to-do list, that embarrassing moment yesterday evening or how you’re going to finish that assignment due next week, keep yourself thinking about what you are doing now. Live in the present. Constantly immersing yourself in busy thoughts will only contribute to stress. 

Mindfulness also requires the acceptance of thoughts and feelings. Knowing that it is okay and natural to be bombarded by thoughts and carried away with feelings, but that we are in control of how much attention we give these. In addition, you can change the way you perceive negative life events: 
It happened → You feel this way → But you can still go on. 
It can really change the way you see the world, consequently leading to better decisions, improved concentration and patience.
